Improving Your Home’s Value with an Outdoor Living Space

It’s finally summer!  Summer vacations are not going to be the same this year so it’s a great time to look at our own outdoor living spaces and make them a resort-like area!  Patio furniture sales are at an all-time high and while more of us are choosing to stay home this summer, our outside living spaces are becoming a focus.

Types of Outdoor Projects that Will Add Value to Your Home

Creating outdoor kitchens, adding decks, patios or sunrooms not only add value in the way of your happiness, but they also add value to your home.  You can expect to get back at least 100% of what you spent; however, the greater real estate benefit is that your home will stand out against the competition when you have an outdoor oasis.

To ensure you get the best return on your outdoor investment, add lighting, seal your deck, build a fire pit or update your furtniture.  However, be careful about taking up too much backyard space.  Many interested buyers look for a large backyard so make sure to leave plenty of open space for activities.

Important Things To Remember

One of the most important things to do when updating your outdoor living space is to check with your HOA or city ordinances.  Depending on your neighborhood, you might need certain permits and/or permissions to build certain structors.  It’s also a good idea to check with your Realtor… We can guide you to understand how much or how little is needed to add monetary value to your home.

I always recommend doing your research before starting any outdoor home project.  Having a good understanding of what you’re allowed to do, how the project will impact the value of your home, and what you’re able to do within your budget will help to maximize the return on your outdoor living space!

With all that said, I just bought some beautiful furniture for my back patio and added lighting, an outdoor rug, new plants, and a bird feeder.  It’s amazing what a little upgrade will do!  I am now enjoying my coffee outside with my puppies every morning!
